This book was extremely helpful to me. I had no idea how to even enter a photography competition until reading this book. What fun it will be to take photos and not only dream of winning one of these competitions, but actually know how to enter!
Way More Than Contest Listings

Kyle has provided an enormous list of photo contests and resources for selling your photos, especially online. The contest listings are organized with the busy photographer in mind: they're arranged by deadline date, and he's left out the contests with insignificant prizes.

That alone would make this a worthy addition to your reference shelf. But Kyle has gone further by including extensive tips for the amateur and aspiring photographer. These are presented in a mercifully brief form (where many authors would go on and on), and will be well worth referring to periodically.

My only negative comment about this book is that Kyle refers to the quality of your processing, knowing your film stocks and using a Polaroid or digital camera to pre-visualize a shot. Unless you shoot with a view camera, these comments could sound fairly dated.

Knowing that, you should not be disappointed with this book. Buy it and win some contests!
A great resource with a bonus section of handy hints.

This book is an easy read and a handy reference. It would be a "must have" for any photographer with a desire to enter photographic competitions. The first six chapters contain some general hints about taking better photographs but nothing too technical. It would be very helpful for beginning photographers and contains some useful reminders for the more experienced.

My favorite quote is:
"Photography should be pursued (like most things in life) because the process is enjoyable: the metaphorical playing in the imaginary sand pit, the visual exploration of ourselves, nature, human beings, our strengths, our identity and the sublime beauty of our world."

I have a friend who has taken thousands of great photographs and never printed one of them. I'm sure it is the careful composing and taking of beautiful images that is most enjoyable for him.

The book certainly lives up to it's promise of providing contact details for photographic competitions but the nice surprise is the inclusion of chapters on grants, fellowships and funding bodies. Since there are three or four chapters on taking better photos, I was surprised that there is only one photo in this photography book - and that was of a painting. I think it could be greatly enhanced with photos that align with the content.

So I give it five stars because it delivers what it promises - and more.
An inspiring guide and resourceful book!

As an amateur photographer, I find this book very encouraging, with full of advices and tips, inspiring quotes and valuable resources. Easy to read and follow. Helps you in aspiring to be a better photographer. What to look for, how to see, how to take great photos and how to judge them and decide whether to submit them to the judges. It also guides you in determining which avenues to pursue as a photographer, whether it be fashion, landmarks, people, etc., and then acquiring detailed specifics from the organization through the channels listed in the second half of the book. I think this book is worthy of a photographer's library, whether it be amateur, professional or an aspiring one.
Great Book! Highly Recommended

Reviewer: Daniel Mohr,
This book was amazingly helpful! It taught me so much about photography competitions, but most of the information it gave about the competitions is also very applicable in day to day shooting. It is jam-packed with practical advice. I have read several library books about photography and this was more helpful than any of them, especially when it comes to photography competitions and stock photography. It is an enjoyable read, well written and in a concise manner.

In the second half, the author put together a huge list of photography contests with details such as entry fee (if any), deadline, who can enter, what the prizes are, etc... This alone makes the book worth it if you are into competitions. The most helpful for me was the large section of tips from contest judges and other professional photographers. The list of places that award grants section at the end has proved to be very rewarding too. It is a great resource for anyone interested in photography contests! It comes highly recommended!
