In every city there are quite a few technically capable wedding photographers who understand lighting and composition. What is not at all obvious when you scrutinize a photographer’s website is their temperament and people skills. All things being equal, what may make or break the final result will be the relationship between the photographer and the bride and groom.

Cost is frequently the major focus – not that that means you should necessarily spend more for better wedding photography. So, if you have looked through a potential photographer’s website and you are impressed, the next step should be meeting the photographer, as opposed to calling to negotiate on price. Of course, some wedding photographers do not list their fees.  Consequently, if price is a  biggy for you it clearly makes sense to make a quick inquiry to make sure they are within your price range.

Presuming the photographer knows their craft, what you should concern yourself with next is connecting with them – so that you’ll trust him/her and they will hopefully reciprocate with more than just a perfunctory effort. Most weddings are very alike so an experienced photographer can all but be on automatic and do the job. Then again, the more of a connection you make, the more appreciation you show, the more personal stake is created for the photographer, who will want to please.

Most beneficially, when you establish good rapport with your photographer and you show confidence, you are more free to be yourself which will result in better pictures.

On the other hand, you can rest assured that if you do not build some kind of bond with your wedding photographer, or worse yet, if you treat them as the ‘help’ or are ill-mannered and unreasonable, then you are rolling the dice. This should be obvious really, but it’s not uncommon for some people to lose their way a bit when dealing with such an overwhelming day.

In conclusion, to maximize the chances of getting better wedding pictures, track down a quality wedding photographer – skill-wise and personality-wise – and then shower them with courtesy and appreciation.
