Seven Reasons to Let Others Take Your Pictures
First cameras became simple and cheap and many decided to be their own amateur photographer. Then digital photography took over and the average person can now take the pictures and print the results cheaper than they formerly let others do it. In spite of this, there are some good reasons, at least sometimes, to let others do the picture taking.
If you are the one to record an event like a family reunion, you know the bondage of always feeling like you must be looking for the perfect shot. To be good you must think like a photographer. Have you ever taken so much time to get a shot that you missed the event? Recently our son called to tell us our granddaughter was in a parade streamed from the TV station on the Internet. I retrieved the camera to record it but missed the moment the camera focused on her because I was fiddling with the camera. Now I wish I had just enjoyed the moment and let them do the picture taking.
Electronics in cameras have definitely made them simple to use. However, keeping all its potential in your mind can be a different story. What do all the icons on top mean? How do you turn the flash or auto focus on or off? What does P, TV, Av, or M stand for? Unless you are using these features regularly, you will probably forget them and they are then as useful as if they were not there at all.
If you are going to be the photographer at an event, you will need to get in some conspicuous place so you can get just the right angle. Further, you can lose a lot of friends by sticking the camera in their face every time they smile. When they don’t smile, you may need to almost bribe or shame them into posing. Why not let someone else be the bad guy for a change?
So let’s say you are the trusted photographer for some important event. Now you are the hero whom others figure has all the time in the world to send them CDs filled with all your good shots. Or they may be sending you an email asking you to post the pictures online or send them as attachments to your email.
But it’s more than just the time involved. Though digital photography need never be printed, some friends simply don’t have access to this media. For them you will need to buy photographic paper and lots of ink for your printer. Are you without a printer? In that case, make sure you get one that has six or more different color cartridges since you will be replacing each one often.
You won’t have any trouble being identified as a tourist if you hang a camera around your neck and take plenty of shots. Oh, and don’t be shocked if people are offended that your picture taking seems to be more important than they are.
If you have a plugged toilet, you get a plunger and fix it. But when a major problem arises, you take it to a mechanic. The same can be said of photography. Sure, keep your camera and take plenty of shots. But when a major event comes up, why don’t you get an expert to take the pictures and you just concentrate on enjoying yourself for a change.
